Literature Text

Maybe if you squinted, the sand would be whiter, but other then the more tan color of the sand, the beach was a paradise. The ocean was calm, the sky blue, the sun baring down on her already tanned skin as Gage Madison sat on her beach towel looking out at the calm waves, light brown waves of hair occasionally flying in front of her face from the ocean breeze.

She had lived on this beach for more then ten years since her father had gotten a promotion at his law firm. Here she met all of his old college friends who had grown up and had families of their own, she had pretty much grown up with all of the children of her father’s friends. Every summer most of their time would be spent on the beach.

They had a spot on the beach that only they stayed on. It was away from the other tourists, a quiet spot a mile from the major hotels and retail areas. Usually watched by a few very attractive lifeguards who were friends of Nikolai Yuri.

Nikolai was the son of Dimitri Yuri, a man who owned a chain of famous bars and a close friend of her father’s. He was a few years older then Gage with neat and well kept blonde hair and dark brown eyes. He was attractive with his semi-tan skin tone and lean-muscular build. Gage would admit that she had a crush on him for most of her middle school years.

As always the two lifeguards were chatting animatedly, once in a while shooting a look over to her and her friend who lay on her stomach next to her. It had been a few years since she was at the beach with Rory St. Claire. Despite being in the same grade, Rory had attended Catholic School until she was 15 and got kicked out for “challenging” one of her teachers. At 15 Rory had come out about being bisexual and her teachers at St. John’s Catholic Academy didn’t take to kindly to it.

Her single father had allowed her to attend a school in Brooklyn, New York with her cousin in order to get away from the heated judgement from their friends and neighbors. Gage didn’t see her much after that, In fact she had stopped seeing her altogether. The girl reemerged a few weeks before high school graduation with blue streaks in her black hair and the black ink of tattoos on her pale skin to announce that she was going to go into the Marine Corps after graduation. Two years of service before an injury got her an honorable discharge.

Gage was happy to see her and immediately wanted to catch up, so she invited Rory to come with her to the beach, just the two of them. Rory had fallen asleep after a half-hour of talking. She seemed to sleep a lot since she got out of the Marines.

The sun had shifted since they sat down and now the light was almost directly against the paler girl’s back that had been previously protected by the shade from the umbrella above them. She was sure to burn sooner or later, knowing this Gage riffled through the beach bag next to her and pulled out the sunscreen she had shoved in there. She popped the cap and ran her fingers across the girl’s shoulder blades, brushing the black hair over her shoulder. She squirts a quarter sized amount of the white substance onto her fingertips before brushing it across the other girl’s shoulder blade, over the black ink that spelled out a few lines from a song above the strap of her bikini top. The four lines read:

I’ll run away with your footsteps
I’ll build a city that dreams for two
And if you lose yourself
I will find you

Gage smiled as she continued moving her hand in a circular motion over her shoulder blades, feeling the muscles of the other girls back contract a few times at the movement before her head shot up and she looked around to take in her surroundings.

“Hey, you keep falling asleep you’ll burn.” Gage teased as the moved her hand towards the girl’s lower back, just barely brushing the waistband of her swim shorts. “Your so vampire pale.”

“I’m not that pale,” The girl snorted back resting her head back down against her folded arms, keeping her face turned to face Gage as she rubbed the sunscreen on her back.

“You kinda are.” Gage rolled her eyes as she brought her forearm up to Rory’s bicep to show the other girl the tone difference in their skin. “See? And your not even Asian.”

“So, by default, I must be a vampire.” Rory commented with sarcasm, “But I don’t sparkle.”

“Details,” Gage smirked as she squirted more sunscreen in her hand and worked circles up towards the back of Rory’s neck, when she looked up towards the ocean she could see the two lifeguards mimicking their actions, chuckling as they watched them.

“Perverts” Rory growled Gage nodded and brushed her hand upwards smearing most of the sunscreen against the side of Rory’s face and ear. “Hey!”

“Don’t worry about them,” Gage hummed as Rory rolled to her side, wiping the excess sunscreen off her face, “Lets go for a walk,”
Rory grunts some kind of agreement before pushing herself up and looking around the fairly empty beach. The high sun suggested it was late afternoon, the beaches by the resorts were probably packed to the seems with sweaty tourists.

They walk towards the tourists, only because Rory kept shooting distrustful looks at the two lifeguards. Gage found Rory was strange like that, she was perfectly fine around Mason or Cody, or any of their friends, but Nikolai and her seemed to stop getting along since before graduation. Anyone associated with Nikolai got the same distrustful look that he got.

The waves push up towards their feet as they walk, the cool water and breeze refreshing against their skin. In the distance they could see the multi-colored umbrellas and bright colored towels.

“Remember when we used to swim out real far to get away from that?” Gage asked as she looks at the other girl out of her field-of-vision. She sees the smile she sees the smile that makes it’s way onto her face.

“Cody would bet us he could beat everyone to the sandbar. Then duck out halfway through.”

“Bet you could beat everyone now.” Gage turned her head to glance at Rory’s profile, seeing the smile become slightly sadder. Rory didn’t talk much about her time in the Marines, it wasn’t long but she could see it affected her friend. “Hey can you make pumpkin spice cookies?”

That rewarded her with a laugh, the girl had a very pretty laugh to her, one that was smooth and mimicked the rasp that was also present in her voice. “You want me to make what?”

“You heard me dork,” Gage grinned and poked at the girl’s ribcage.

“It’s summer” Rory commented as her laughter died down, “We only make those in autumn.”

Rory and her father worked in a bakery, Zebra Cakes and Cocoa, a quirky shop run by her father, both Rory and her brothers worked there. Rory as a baker and pastry chef while her older brother, Wren, worked as the bookkeeper. Her younger brother, Ridge, worked as a waiter and barista.

“If I know you, which I do, you were only going to bake anyway while you were supposed to be on relaxing,” Gage pointed out matter-of-factly. Rory’s father had given her some time to get adjusted after she got back. She still had another week before she went back to the bakery. Summer was a slower time for the most part. Other then the bridal cakes they were commissioned to make, Gage remembers the bakery being pretty empty when she would visit. “Mind as well throw a request out there.”

Rory let out a breath that came out as if she was holding back another chuckle. “Alright, just don’t expect perfection. They wont taste as good without fresh pumpkin.”

Gage smiled as they continued their walk, the sun was quickly causing a sweat to form down the back of Gage’s neck as she walked farther into the ocean to be relieved of the heat. Rory stayed where she was, watching Gage go out until she was about knee deep in water before the brown haired girl stopped and bent down to fish something out of the water.

“Remember the shell game?” Gage called over as she held up a small white shell for Rory to see.

“Yeah, you used to search this beach up and down to find two shells that went together.” Rory recalled as Gage walked back towards her and out of the water. “Nikolai told you he’d date you if you found two that matched, you looked for hours each day.”

“You helped me,” Gage states as she plays with the shell in her hand.

“He wasn’t going to you know,” Rory started as as Gage looks up, her hazel eyes are quickly locked onto dark blue ones, “He was making fun of you. That you would search that hard for a date.”

“Are you worried about me?” Gage teased lightly, “Roar that was a long time ago. I thought Nick was a hunk back then. It was way before his bad attitude broke through.”

Rory snorted and turned away, continuing to walk straight as if her feet were on autopilot. She almost got into a march that was sure to have been left over from her Marine basic training.

“Relax,” Gage smiled and looped her arm through Rory’s, “You’re so serious lately.”
PREVIEW OF AN ORIGINAL WORK I'M DOING

Please leave feedback, I'm also working on chapters of my fanfiction but I really wanted to try to see if I could create an original story too!

I really like the chemistry I've got with Gage and Rory.
